Chapter 10 Quiz

We will not be taking a test over Chapter 10 as there are only two key ideas students need to master (convection and wind). Instead, we will be taking a short quiz to show mastery of these skills. Completing the Chapter 10 Study Guide will help students prepare for the quiz, which will be on Monday, October 20th.

Also, we went over a Heat Transfer Prezi today and some students asked for the link. Here it is!

Chapter 15 Extra Credit Opportunity

Students may complete #'s 9-14 on page 474 of their textbook for up to 6 points of extra credit on their Chapter 15 Test. Remember, I offer tutoring at 8:00am on Thursdays. Please notify me when your child would like to join my tutoring sessions so that I can prepare individualized lessons for his/her specific needs.

Chapter 15 Test: September 24th

Chapter 15 Study Guide
Here are the items to study for Wednesday’s test:
1. Know the definitions of the following: ion, resistant, proton, electron, voltage, electric discharge
2. Be able to label each item in a circuit (battery, switch, wire, buzzer, bulb, etc.)
3. Know the difference between a series circuit and a parallel circuit
4. Be able to identify each type of circuit when looking at a diagram
5. Know which circuits produce sound, light, or heat. (Does it have a light bulb, a buzzer, or something else?)
6. Know how to identify if a circuit is open or closed (hint: check the switch or see if there is a break in the circuit)
7. Identify the energy transformations in a circuit
Ex: battery (chemical) -> wire (electrical) - > bulb (radiant/light)….or buzzer (sound)
8. Know the definitions of insulator (plastic, wood, glass, etc.) and conductor (metals) and be able to identify examples of each. (What are braces?)
9. Be able to explain if there is a problem in a circuit (ex: open switch, wrong materials, incorrect connection, etc.)

10.  Be able to label the parts of an atom.

Extra Credit

Many students have been asking about extra credit to boost their Chapter 14 test grade.

They may complete Chapter 15 TCAP Test Preparation: Part 1 (#'s 1-11) on page 476 of their textbook and turn in by Thursday, September 11th. I will give them 1 point for every correct answer.

The textbook can be found here.
The student access code is C85A1E52C8

Chapter 15: Electricity

This week's skills have been posted on my class webpage, along with related handouts and online games. Homework has also been posted on both the website and Homework Page. It is not due until Tuesday, September 23rd. The tentative date for the Chapter 15 test is Wednesday, September 24th.

Conference Night is next Thursday, September 18th. I will be sending home conference requests along with interims this Wednesday. If you are ever interested in Thursday morning tutoring, please send in a note with your child or email me by the Wednesday before the tutoring date.

Chapter 14: Additional Study Guide

Chapter 14 Study Guide

Test: Friday, September 5th

1. Know the types of energy and be able to identify examples of each
2. Define: renewable, alternative resources, turbine, generator, non-renewable
3. Energy transformation flow charts
(example: the hairdryer =  electrical -> thermal -> mechanical)
4. Be able to label the types of energy in diagrams (ex: lamp in Interactive Notebook)
5. Understand the Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed (or lost)
6. Know how to calculate joules. (ex: Lanie owns a 150 watt laptop computer. It transforms all of its 150 joules of electrical energy into heat energy, sound energy, and light energy. It uses 90 joules of heat energy and 40 joules of light energy. How much sound energy does it use?)

Chapter 14, Section 3 Notes

We are learning how to write notes using the Cornell System. Here are today's notes.
