Science and Technology: Energy Pyramids

Today we used our computers to learn more about energy pyramids. Students were able to work at their own pace using this Energy Pyramid Webmix!

Successful Lab Day!

We had a blast working with the circuit boards on Monday. Students had to create simple circuits (series and parallel); however, most of them wanted a challenge! Here are a couple of pictures of the more complex circuits they built!

P.S. Did you catch a glimpse of the supermoon lunar eclipse? My students will be older than me the next time it occurs!

Inquiry Study Guide

INQUIRY STUDY GUIDE

·      Know the steps of the scientific method
·      Identify the purpose of lab tools (graduated cylinder for liquids, thermometer for temperature, stop watch for speed, etc.)
·      Be able to distinguish between variables and control
o   Independent: Changes on purpose
o   Dependent: Happens because the independent variable is changed
o   Control: Stays the same throughout the entire experiment
§  Ex: Because I changed the amount of water I gave each soybean (independent variable), each bean spouted on a different day (dependent variable). I made sure to keep the type of soybean, size/style of flower pot, amount/type of soil, and access to sunlight the same (control variables).
·      Determine if the results of an experiment are biased (Ex: asking only the football team if they want a new stadium or a new library) or if there is an experimental error (Ex:  If all data recorded is similar except for one, then the one that does not belong was probably recorded incorrectly)
·      Distinguish between adaptive (permanently changed like Lasik eye surgery, doorbells that flash a light, etc.) and assistive (can be removed like glasses, contacts, walking cane, wheelchair, etc.) devices.
·      Know the steps of the engineering design process
o   Ex: What happens after you build a prototype?

·      Identify benefits and consequences of technology

TCAP Study Guides: Part 1 and Part 2

We have been going over key concepts of Energy, Electricity, and Ecosystems. I have compiled a study guide to narrow down these key concepts. A printable version can be found on my school webpage.

Part 2 of our study guide has been posted. It covers the Universe and Atmosphere & Weather.

TCAP will begin on Tuesday, April 28th. My students have done exceptionally well this year and I can't wait to see their results!

Ecosystems Unit Quiz (Friday, March 13th)

Due to an unfortunate illness and fortunate snow days, a formal Study Guide will be sent home to review for the Ch.3-4 Quiz. The quiz will include questions on the following information:

1. Producers, Consumers, Decomposers and Scavengers
2. Food Chains, Food Webs, and Energy Pyramids
3. Symbiosis: Mutualism, Commensalism, and Parasitism
4. Abiotic (wind, water, rocks, temperature, light) and Biotic (all living organisms) Elements in Ecosystems
5. Biomes: Tundra, grassland, desert, rain forest, savannah, wetland, taiga, deciduous forest (climate, plants, animals, etc of each)
6. Additional vocabulary: adaptations, carrying capacity, limiting factors

Mentos Experiment

Weekly Homework

To help students review weekly Science skills, I will be assigning 10 practice questions on www.usatestprep.com each week. Students have been using this website in each of their classes all school year.
I will post assignments on Friday and they will be due the following Thursday. Each assignment is set up so that students can retake it one time to improve their score. It also explains why answers are correct or incorrect.
I understand some students do not have Internet access at home. Students can come early on Thursday mornings (8:05am) to complete the assignment during tutoring time or I can print a hard copy for them. Please feel free to email me with any questions.
