GUIDE
· Know the
steps of the scientific method
· Identify the
purpose of lab tools (graduated
cylinder for liquids, thermometer for temperature, stop watch for speed, etc.)
· Be able
to distinguish between variables and control
o
Independent: Changes
on purpose
o
Dependent: Happens
because the independent variable is changed
o
Control: Stays
the same throughout the entire experiment
§ Ex:
Because I changed the amount of water I gave each soybean (independent
variable), each bean spouted on a different day (dependent variable). I made
sure to keep the type of soybean, size/style of flower pot, amount/type of
soil, and access to sunlight the same (control variables).
· Determine
if the results of an experiment are biased
(Ex: asking only the football team if they want a new stadium or a new library)
or if there is an experimental error
(Ex: If all data recorded is similar
except for one, then the one that does not belong was probably recorded
incorrectly)
· Distinguish
between adaptive (permanently
changed like Lasik eye surgery, doorbells that flash a light, etc.) and assistive (can be removed like glasses,
contacts, walking cane, wheelchair, etc.) devices.
· Know the
steps of the engineering design process
o
Ex: What happens after you build a
prototype?
· Identify benefits and consequences of technology
